OFF THE HOOK

It has been almost fifteen years now, since the first rules governing lifeboat and davit inspections were introduced. They are currently focused on lifeboat manufacturers to carry out the necessary inspections and re-certifications. But as the marine industry may not be aware, the majority of lifeboat manufacturers have acted simply as a 'component integrator'.

As we have all been made aware through the various reports and publications on the subject, most lifeboat accidents have been attributed to the malfunction of the hook release system, either due to poor design, poor maintenance, or poor training.
